Bailey's story is an example of the American Dream: a Black immigrant from Panama, without education, money, or connections, becomes a trendsetter in designing the most expensive celebrations. Why did this happen, and can this path be repeated?
Our hero was born in Panama, one of the most picturesque places on the planet. The Caribbean Sea with its lush flora and colorful fauna washes the country from the east, while the Pacific Ocean with its long sandy beaches, like in "Baywatch," lies to the west. The tropical beauty that half of Northern Europeans dream about was ordinary life for the boy.

In Panama, in our backyard, there were whole thickets of bird of paradise flowers, and I spent my entire childhood thinking they were weeds. I was surprised when I found out how much they cost in America. I can't stand those flowers!
A person who grew up in freedom and beauty sees the rest of the world the same way: everywhere is fun and easy. At 18 (1968), Preston Bailey leaves Panama for the USA. He wasn't thinking about conquering the world then — he simply hoped to study accounting.

Advice from EventForMe
Surround your children with nature and beauty, allow them to feel freedom. Only free people can become great.
In those years, the process of ending racial segregation begins in the USA, thousands gather for rallies (against war, for rights, etc.), Elvis Presley causes thousands of fans to faint at concerts, the series "Star Trek" hits television screens, and Americans land on the Moon. New York, where Bailey settles, is perceived as nothing less than the center of the world and the most vibrant point on the planet. The atmosphere of that era can be felt in films like "Men in Black 3," "Midnight Cowboy," and "Forrest Gump."

New York captivates Preston immediately and forever: the world's greatest florist still lives in this city, in an apartment on Lexington Avenue. In the very heart of Manhattan with low-rise buildings from the 70s of the last century and bars that O. Henry wrote about over a hundred years ago. The young Preston's original plan goes into the trash, and the would-be accountant himself, tall and handsome as Apollo, heads into the fashion industry, onto runways and photo shoots. After working as a model, he eventually becomes a men's clothing designer himself. Then more: riding the wave of success and boldness, Bailey opens his own boutique. The 70s style is reflected in that very series "Star Trek": narrow high-waisted pants, bright patterns, and sexy shorts of unimaginable constructions.

Be ready for more, don't miss the moment, participate in crazy projects, choose ambitious ideas and bring them to life.
According to contemporaries, Preston's first business becomes successful and profitable but goes bankrupt in 1980 with the onset of the oil crisis. However, the world of fashion and design leaves our hero with unique experience and numerous acquaintances with those who will later appreciate his talent as a florist. He already has everything else: perfect appearance and the disarming friendliness for which he is known to this day.
I've loved parties and celebrations since I was young — perhaps that's why I later started organizing them.
Almost all of Preston Bailey's close friends have walked through life hand in hand with him since those times. One of them is interior designer Vicente Wolf. This Cuban émigré and self-taught designer is considered a co-founder of the high-tech style. It was Wolf, an icon of modern New York design, who suggested that Preston create floral arrangements for some of his acquaintances: thus began the career of the legendary florist.

Soon it becomes clear that people are absolutely delighted by the unusual bouquets assembled by the self-taught artist. Perhaps Preston's rise to popularity was aided by two main principles in his work:
The more, the better.
Seeing the beauty of flowers "outside the vase."
Bailey opens a new boutique, now as a designer-florist, and creates striking compositions for wealthy New York residents. Gradually his business expands into an event agency: this is how the company Preston Bailey Design appears.

Sometimes a decisive step forward is the result of a good kick from behind. Don't be afraid of failures — they are what inspire us to victory.
In the 90s, another person appears in Bailey's life who will help his career. Actress Joan Rivers becomes not only a friend and business partner for our hero but also a personal mentor, supporting him in all his endeavors. Preston designs two important family events for the Rivers family: a dinner party for thirty guests and the wedding of her daughter, Melissa, in 1998. By the way, according to his own words, the idea for the wedding design was suggested to Preston by Russian winter. He tried to embody precisely this image. After the first success comes the second, then the third, and for over 20 years now our hero has been preparing expensive and iconic celebrations. He is hired by Oprah Winfrey, Uma Thurman, Liza Minnelli, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas, the Trump family, and other celebrities.

I'm happy when, meeting my clients 10 or 20 years later, I hear from them: "Preston, people still talk about that thing you created" or "I still remember how amazed I was that evening."
Fame about the floral couturier spreads far beyond the USA, and Preston masters the premium event market in Asia, from Indonesia to the Maghreb. Most orders in the Middle East come from royal families, and they really like the principle "the more, the better," because there's never too much! Every event should look as generous and abundant as possible, while the use of natural elements is also considered significant.

One of the biggest compliments is when people replicate my work. It supports me and makes me come up with something new. [But] they can't copy the madness that goes on in my head!
Regardless of his own ambitions, Preston first and foremost fulfills his clients' wishes as precisely as possible.
"The most unusual order? A 26-foot flower sculpture of a dinosaur. I love requests like that!"

Although the maestro completed several courses in set design at New York University, the king of floristry acquired the main part of his experience during the first ten years of work, through trial and error. At first, his mistakes were costly, but the knowledge gained this way is priceless.
If you make enough mistakes, you eventually become an expert.
Advice from EventForMe
Listen carefully to your clients, fulfill their wishes, and even correct their and your own mistakes at your own expense.
Bailey doesn't believe that beautifully designed parties are meant only for the rich and famous.
When I started, my first budget was $200.
The desire to support the events industry and make entry into it more accessible leads Preston to create the PB Protégé program. His company launches a series of master classes for event business professionals.

In 2006, Bailey enters into a partnership with 1-800-Flowers, a large retail chain selling flowers and gifts. His goal is to make original floral arrangements and custom souvenirs affordable for practically anyone. In 2007, he develops a series of affordable wedding ceremonies for guests of Sandals Resorts, an operator of luxury hotels in the Caribbean. Bailey also sits on the advisory board of Modern Bride magazine, participates in various television programs, and in 2006 hosts a show named after himself on the Oxygen channel: Preston Bailey, Mr. Fabulous. This show becomes the most popular in the channel's history.
I hope to leave behind a business that will organize events accessible to everyone.
It's not known for certain whether Preston has designed celebrations for wealthy people and celebrities from various countries, but in February 2014, he conducted a master class in Moscow as part of the Moscow Wedding Stars project.

Share your experience, help newcomers grow. You won't take your millions with you to another life, but in this one you can support those who need it, even if just with advice.
The floral wizard is in no hurry to talk about his plans. Sometimes he gets by with general words about collaboration with the film industry, or jokes that he's going to head Netflix. He can also simply and delicately avoid the question: saying there are some ideas. And this is understandable — each new step must be worthy of his current level of mastery.
Some consider accumulated wealth a sign of success. For others, it's important to build a business empire from scratch. Some absolutely need to be acquainted with famous and influential people. Our hero has all of this, yet he doesn't deviate one iota from either his talent or his origins. A professional of the highest caliber, in love with his craft, Preston Bailey continues working at an already venerable age, never ceasing to think about the pressing need for beauty in all people, regardless of the thickness of their wallets.
